About Ubuntu Kids

So What’s This Site For?
Basically, this site is here to help you use Ubuntu. You see, you probably know a lot about how to use Windows or Mac computers because they have them in schools and you probably have one or more of them at home. You are familiar with them. You are not familiar with Ubuntu — yet! So it’s going to take some time to find out how to do the things the Ubuntu way. It’s different. We are here to help you. We have discovered that, in many ways, Ubuntu is simply better than anything else. We would like to share this with you.

But What The Heck Is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is an operating system - it’s what makes your computer usable. Without an operating system a computer is just a box of expensive electronics. You are probably familiar with Microsoft Windows or Mac OSX. Well, Ubuntu is similar. Like these other operating systems, Ubuntu lets you use your computer to do stuff like surf the web, play games, do homework, build a website or even run a business. In order for a computer to do anything it needs an operating system. It’s kind of like how a car needs gas before you can go anywhere. Without gas a car is just an expensive piece of equipment that can’t do much of anything. An operating system is kind of like gas for your computer - without an OS your computer can’t do much of anything either.

So Why Should I Use Ubuntu?
Actually, you don’t have to. If you want to use Ubuntu you can. If you don’t want to then don’t. That may sound dumb but it is actually a big reason why Ubuntu is really quite cool - because you have a choice. If you are using a Windows or Mac computer right now, then you don’t have much choice. You have to use your computer the way the people who made the Windows and Mac operating system say you should. Sure, they give you a lot of options to make it feel like you can do anything, but you can’t use your computer for something they don’t want you to use it for. These rules are called a license. The Windows and Mac operating systems each have a license that basically limits what you can use it for. Many people don’t care or don’t even know. They just keep using it because they are familiar with it. Other people don’t like this. They don’t like being told what they can and can’t do with their own computer. Those people build, develop and use software that is free of these restrictions. They also GIVE their software away for free.

Ubuntu is all about choice. If you don’t like how it looks - change it. If you don’t like the way something works - do it a different way. If something doesn’t work right - fix it. If you want different software - install it (and it’s all FREE).

Ubuntu is also much less likely to have virus and spyware problems which means more time having fun and less time dealing with problems.

Okay, You Convinced Me. How Do I Get Ubuntu?
Well, this is a bit complicated. Unless you buy a new computer that comes with Ubuntu, you (or your parents) will have to install it. It’s not that hard to install, but it’s also not real easy either. It helps to know a bit about how computers work and how operating systems work. If you want to install it yourself, there is information here to get you or your parents started. You might also be able to find someone to help you. Most people who use Ubuntu want to help others use it too. The Ubuntu community is full of really cool people. Find someone and ask them. I bet they’ll help. There is information here too about finding these people.
